>> From feenix.metronet.com!steele Sat Oct 30 11:56:23 1993 >> From: Jeri Steele I. From sheet of information available at the Texas Archives: INSTRUCTIONS FOR TEXAS LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES ONLINE CATALOG The Texas State Library and Archives Commission Library Catalog of Texas State Agencies The Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSL) is now available for public use. To use the catalog, please follow the instructions below. Call Bonnie Grobar with any problems or suggestions. What is an OPAC? It is a computerized catalog for the holdings of the Texas State Library and Archives, plus other state agencies that are partners in this project. This OPAC contains about half a million titles, including: -- Federal depository publications -- Texas state publications -- Reference, Genealogy, Texas, Records Management, Talking Books Reference, and Library Science collections -- Archives book collection and selected manuscripts -- selected titles from the State Law Library What are TSL's plans for the OPAC? Presently the OPAC is available to anyone with access to a computer, modem, and telecommunications software. Materials found in the OPAC can be checked out from circulating collections (such as Reference) or used on-site. TSL is also inviting all other state agency libraries and information clearinghouses to add their collections to the OPAC. Note that the State Law Library is already adding titles from their collection. How can I use the OPAC? There are two ways to access the OPAC 1) You can access the OPAC through Internet. Telnet to gabi.tsl.texas.gov (or 192.80.50.1). VTl00 terminal emulation is required. 2) You can access the OPAC through a modem if you have: -- PC or Macintosh with telecommunications software that will emulate VTl00 (ProComm or Comet work best) or -- VTl00 terminal Set your modem to: -- data bits =8, stop bits = 1 -- parity = none -- speed up to 14.4 kbps (sometimes called "baud rate") Dial 512-475-4444 In either case, login as 'public', press return twice, and you are in the OPAC. DO NOT USE FUNCTION KEYS! You can arrow to a selection and press return, or use "hot keys" which are highlighted and underlined. [These are one letter selections, such as 'x' for Exit...jjs] If you don't see highlights or underlines, maybe adjusting the intensity of your screen will help. We have function key information available for those using emulators with a key re-mapping feature. Where can I get more information or help with problems? -- Contact Bonnie Grobber at 512/463-5427 (bgrobar@tsl.texas.gov) Pub 7/93 -------------------------------------------------- II. More information on sheet available at Texas Archives: Library Catalog of Texas State Agencies .This catalog includes all machine readable records for the different collections at the Texas State Library as well as some records far the State Law Library. .When you get a list of titles, those in the genealogy Collection will be highlighted. .Some of the older books may not be in the on-line catalog yet. To Search the On-Line Catalog: 1. Select the Category of Search (Author, Title, Subject, etc.) you wish to use. 2. Enter your search term (What you're looking for). 3. Select the Type of Search, either 'Scan Headings', which is an alphabetical or browse search Use 'Scan Headings',when you know the correct first few words of the search term or 'Find Words', which is a keyword search Use Find Words (Keyword) when you know some of the words, but not the exact term. 4. If you use 'Scan Headings', you will be shown the portion of the alphabetic listing where your search term would appear. If it is in the collection you will see it about midway down the list. Select the term you want by typing the appropriate line number, and then choose 'Display Brief Record' from the options box. This will give you the Copy Availability screen with the call number. If you wish to see the Full Record, you can choose to do so from here. [Note books listed in reference may possibly be available on inter-library loan, Genealogy, Archives, and Texas collection books are not...jjs] If you use the Find Words option, the system will look for you search term anywhere in the entry (not just at the beginning). The search term will be displayed with the number of references found. 'Select the term' by typing the line number. You will then see a list of the titles which matched. Again 'select the titles' you want to look at by typing the line number. Use the choices in the options box to choose either 'Display Full Record' or 'Copy Availability' (call number screen). If you want to return to you list, use "x" for "Exit Screen". General Principles: Watch the bottom left of the screen for instructions, and the box at the bottom right of the screen for available options. The underlined letter or this function key listed can be used to tell the computer your choice of options. 'Display Full Record' gives you something similar to a card catalog entry. 'Copy Availability' screen gives you the call number. This is only a brief summary of the search process, there are many refinements that can be used in searching. Please ask if you need help. Also, you can always use F2 to get the help screen. III. Example TX archives session. (Commentary in brackets by Jeri Steele) telnet gabi.tsl.texas.gov Trying... Connected to gabi.tsl.texas.gov.
